A spattering of spoems

The last snotty exhalations
Of decrepit academia
A wind like light inspired
Escaping aged lungs––edges of thought
Reason filling itself with water
Drunken with fact burning like spirits
To embalm in advance the remains
Interred in cap and gown before a headstone
Of paper earned only with steady marks

––––––––––––

Well,
My two
Favorite things:
Probably girls and trees.
I like trees for standing there,
looking pretty and swaying lazily
back and forth, reaching for something.
Girls are significantly more complicated
but I appreciate them most
for just standing there,
you know,
being smart.

––––––––––––

Fo-ur tehhh-wenty
Yes, it is five syllables.
Fuck you. I’m trying.

  1. Brilliant – absolutely! I love the struggle through the academia and the near survival (you made me laugh – I felt that way in 2009 when I got my degree at 57) – and the second stanza – so sweet, so very much written by a man. This is why we girls, complicated as we are, love you guys. Don’t forget however, we (the pretty things that stand and sway in our youthful days) are like trees, for we too, reach for something. I loved this poem – the tone, the imagery, the lighthearted jest and the sweet sincereity.
